Ever see this fruit? Its called Bambangan fruit here. Do you have this in your place? It is another species of mango but quite big and usually we make Bambangan pickles out of it.
You have to cut it like this to open, so that you can just pull the thick skin from the flesh.
credits to http://abgnua.blogspot.comThe taste is sweet kind like mango, sometimes sweet sour just like our life..

I love this fruit , it is called mammy apple. In Martinique it is called abricot. It makes a beautiful jam or drink. I prefer it raw. I have a tree but it takes many years before it produces fruit. I hae noticed some tiny flowers in it so am very hopeful. YUM YUM
Honestly, I have never seen this fruit before. Looks like chiku skin on the outside and mango flesh inside! I learnt something new today.
Hi Helen,
Bambangan when eaten raw is sickly sour. I never try it as a drink or jam. It is quite similar like the Mammy Apple that you've mentioned only that we prefer the Bambangan ripen then we make pickles from it. Else we jut cut a slice from a raw Bambangan to put in a fish soup. I wish you will have a mammy Apple harvest this year..*smiles*
Autumn Belle :
Mostly people said that this Bambangan can only be found in Borneo but perhaps they have it in your place with other names. The Kadazan-Dusun are famous for the Bambangan pickles though many have learnt the recipes.
This fruit looks strange to me. Outside looks like a giant ciku but inside looks like mango. But sounds nice. I would love to taste it one day ;-) Have another fruitful day FJL!
Stephanie,
I heard that one can only find this fruit in Borneo, but perhaps it is growing in another place with different names. This fruit is also a seasonal fruit. When you have the chance to visit Sabah, try asking this fruit in the market. Hope you can have the chance to taste it one day. Thanks again for visiting my blog.
FJL... Kakdah has done sambal mixed with bambangan before. She treated Bambangan just like Bacang.. or Kuinin... I agree, to eat it raw, awfully sour!!
~ bangchik.
Bangchik and Kakdah,
Yes to make sambal from Bambangan is like you make sambal with mango, or kuinin phew..you can have 2 to 3 plates of rice when eaten with salty fish hehe. Glad you have tasted it before. I bet you already tried lots of local fruits here.
FJL, this is the first time that I have heard of Bambangan. I will certainly heed your advice to check out the market in Sabah on various local fruits on my next visit.
J.C,
