The 'Tamu' in my place..

>> Sunday, September 28, 2008

The marketplace in my place is known as "Tamu". Locally means 'meet', tamu is where the local farmers sell their product ranging from vegetables, plants, food like cakes, cookies, chickens, fruits, rice, clothes and varieties of other farmers local food and drinks. The tamu is held every Thursday and Sunday. I have the chance to go to the tamu this morning and managed to snap some pictures with my handphone resulting images that were not very clear. I remembered to bring the camera but left it at home as its too daring for me to shot in unashamed manner haha whats the big deal.

Mostly people would prefer the local food as the veggies are believed to have less fertilizers and cheap compare to veggies sold in the regular market, what is more? the veggies quantity.  Sellers also tend to sell the veggies in cheap prices when noon time is coming as other sellers packing their things home.

have to use oil (suggesting cooking oil )to get rid of the sticky white sap that bleeds from the fruit when you open it with knife.
The fruits can also be used to make jack fruit's chips.

Sweet Potato, betel nut

>> Tuesday, September 16, 2008

The flowers look like morning glory except that it has a faded colour of purple. This is the sweet potato's flower grows near the creek behind my house. My husband planted them and there are some more growing near my house. The sweet potato's scientific name is Ipomea Batatas. It is a crop plant and its young leaves and shoots can be eaten as greens. What I like about this plant, is, its tuberous roots are sweet tasting. You can make kuih or cakes from it and it is said can be eaten to cool down the body warm temperature, quoted from my mother in law's daily knowledge....

nice color of flowers

a borrowed ubi manis picture
the tuberous roots which is sweet tasting or in Bahasa Malaysia -Ubi Manis, any other names?

NEXT- Here comes Betel nut or also known as Areca nut and in Bahasa Malaysia -buah pinang- is my favorite chewable nut but not really a nut whereas when eaten can cause a hot sensation like a bit dizzy, but the effects are vary from the person eating it. My mother's advice when buying or choosing this nut to eat is that when you divide the nut into half and you see the rather white colors of the nut its indicating a sign of not causing a dizzy feeling..but when you see the nut's color is more to red be caution you will find yourself sweating with those dizzy feeling ,from my experience. Eating and chewing betel nut can be addictive but I use to eat the nuts more when Im in my parent's home, even though I have it in my place and planted it I seldom eat it.

These two betel nut trees are good betel nuts, not causing those dizzy feeling.. for me.

Just the title.. Once I liked to plant varieties of hibiscus colors, but then the hobby tends to lack as this flower the hybrid one, doesn't bloom for long compare to the red ones, there are hundreds of hybrids to enjoy in every color imaginable ..First this red hibiscus.. which also represent the national flowers of Malaysia. Its scientific name is hibiscus rosa-sinensis,. I have a friend whose daughter's name is Rosa Angelica..cool eh.
The leaves of this red hibiscus can be mashed and the paste can be put on the forehead if one has a fever, it is said to reduce the heat from the fever.
Some facts of hibiscus :
- the dried hibiscus is edible, and is often a delicacy in Mexico.
- the hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Hawaiian women. A single flower is tucked behind the ear. Which ear is used indicates the wearer's availability for marriage.
- In Egypt and Sudan, roselle petals are used to make a tea named after the plant, karkade. (all internet sources)
